Promoting environmental projects...

2) Promoting environmental projects and organic cotton farming.

Sustainability and development go hand in hand, and People Tree has always been passionate about environmental issues.

In the same way that conventional trading practice exploits people, it also exploits our natural environment and resource base in its tireless search for the cheapest prices, maximising profits and shortermism.

People Tree has been at the forefront of the Fair Trade movement in campaigning for environmental issues. We are the ones that wrote the environmental standard.

We have helped Fair Trade groups access azo-free (safe) and natural dyes and have helped provide training, testing and certification, protecting the environment and customer's health.

We have helped producers identify biodegradable materials and sustainable fibres to help open new markets for environmentally friendly products.

We have helped strengthen Fair Trade groups' capacity in record keeping and transparency to improve the environmental integrity of their products and help them benefit by reaching new markets for their products.

Organic Cotton

People Tree was the first to develop a Fairtrade and organic cotton supply chain (certified through Global Organic Textile Standards) in the developing world. From the field to the final product we have helped producers meet challenging standards.

People Tree works closely with Agrocel and Assisi Garments in India to improve the quality of the cotton fibre and fabric, whilst using TV documentaries, short films, press media and public business events to campaign internationally for organic Fair Trade cotton.

In 2007 People Tree trained 3 leading agriculturalists from Bangladesh in organic and Fair Trade cotton farming in India. In June 2008 organic cotton was piloted in Bangladesh and received government approval.

We are now looking forward to scaling it up together with local partner Waste Concern.
